Experience Description

It happened forty years ago and I can still remember details as if it were yesterday. When I was eight years old I was electrocuted while taking a shower due. We had an old hot water heater that was short-circuiting, engulfing me in an electrified stream. I felt sharp, stinging needles shoot into my arms and my chest that felt like I was being set on fire from the inside. It was the worst pain I have ever felt.

Before I lost consciousness, I remember hearing the agonizing cries and terrible screams. I will never forget those sounds, as if they were coming from someone other than myself.

Then, things changed and it seemed like my whole short life was quickly flashed before me like a movie reel. I later learned that my dad grabbed me out of the shower, laid me down, and put a towel on me.

Instantly, I whooshed up to the ceiling and saw my dad performing CPR on me. I didn’t linger around, but went down the hall and saw my mom crying hysterically while on the phone. In the living room I saw my little brother curled up in a terrified ball on the rocking chair. I could see and hear but couldn’t communicate at all. Going outside, I saw the ambulance pull up. Then, I started to feel a dark but extremely, peaceful tunnel around me. Although I couldn’t recognize the faces or identify the spirits around me, I knew that I was with familiar and loving souls, possibly my ancestors. An intensely bright, warm light enveloped me. It felt like the most tranquil home full of love and I did not want to leave. A voice in my head, like telepathy, told me that it was not my time. I was to go back and figure out how to use my gift with others. I quickly landed back in my body and haven’t been the same since.

Fast forward to my life as I turn fifty years old this year. I used to have PTSD when I smelled burning hair or flesh, or if the water temperature would go from really hot to really cold. It comes to me in dreams and for the first time I’m starting to talk about what happened, to share my story. To this day, my parents won’t talk about that night. Now that I’m a parent I understand; the doctors don’t know how I survived. After this incident, I consider everything past that night in the early 1980’s to be my bonus time - a gift in itself.

For twenty years I have devoted my life to being a boy mom, teaching in public schools, and am now an end-of-life educator, which I feel is my higher calling.

This experience showed me that the most important thing we can do is to love and show that love to others. Money, looks, material things, and power, that all strips away. The true meaning of a full life is to love and show that loving-kindness. It IS what we take with us.

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes I saw how my family was reacting, the ambulance pull up outside, and even some neighbors that were running to my house to help. I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. I felt that all the answers of the universe were quickly given to me.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? The bright light and message I received

Were your thoughts speeded up? Incredibly fast

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Time seemed to go faster or slower than usual. Many things seemed to be happening very quickly.

Were your senses More vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Yes It was dark but not scary.

Did you see any beings in your experience? I sensed their presence

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings? Uncertain. I sensed that they were my family, ancestors.

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? A light clearly of mystical or other-worldly origin

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes Bright but very warm and comforting.

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm Very tranquil

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Extreme love and care. I wish that I could stop my family from crying over me.

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Incredible peace or pleasantness

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything? Everything about the universe. It is very difficult to describe. It was revealed to me, then quickly all moved on.

Did scenes from your past come back to you? My past flashed before me, out of my control. It flashed quickly like a movie reel.

Did scenes from the future come to you? Scenes from my personal future. It is all in a blur but it did seem to hint at my life's mission.

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a barrier that I was not permitted to cross; or was sent back against my will. It was very tranquil and I did not want to leave.

What was your religion prior to your experience? Christian- Protestant At 8 years old, I attended Sunday school in a southern Baptist church on occasion.

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? Yes I feel spiritually connected to the universe.

What is your religion now? Other or several faiths Highly spiritual

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was entirely consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. Besides being young, there were no talk shows, books or tv programs about this stuff in the early 1980s. I thought for a long time that my experience was isolated, so I kept it to myself for many years.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Yes I became highly spiritual.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? I encountered a definite being, or a voice clearly of mystical or unearthly origin It was like telepathy message, heard in my head.

Did you see deceased or religious spirits? I sensed their presence

During your experience, did you gain information about the existence of God? Uncertain I do know that love is the life goal.

During your experience, did you gain information about love? Yes The main message is about love. It is what we are made of when stripped down.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life. The aftereffects: I am a sound healer, public school teacher, and death doula. I am following my higher calling to help others not be so scared of death, but to live fully with love.

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes I did not talk of this experience to anyone for many, many years.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience. I remember that Trapper John, MD was on tv, that I felt strange like something was wrong as the evening came closer. It was like I was behind myself, looking at myself.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes Natural empath, sensitive to spirit energy, intuitive.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The most meaningful is learning that I have a gift to share with the world.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes I didn't talk of this NDE for at least 10 years after the incident. I kept it to myself to not upset others. Most people tear up, get goosebumps, or are awed by the story.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? No

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely rea.l I can still see everything exactly as it happened as I was out of body.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real. I was so young that something like this would not be in schema of thinking. It was definitely real.
