Experience Description

After being in a head on collision by a drunk driver, the airbags knocked unconscious for about a minute. When I came to, I realized I was trapped and unable to get out of my car. My daughter managed to escape the vehicle and was coming to help me get out, when she passed out on the side of the road. I was conscious during the entire event. I was trying to get out of the car until I realized I was badly injured. I had open fractures in my legs and foot. I could tell my neck was broken because I could not lift my head. I began trying to say the Lord's prayer and would start saying it, and then would feel myself trying to pass out. I knew in my heart that if I went to sleep, I was most likely going to die. I kept trying to say the prayer to keep myself awake.

Suddenly, I felt like I went from my car to another realm. There's was no tunnel. I could not see myself. It just felt like I went from earth to another realm. I was on my knees, crouching down scared. But, yet I felt peaceful in the same moment. I could see green grass and a stream to my right. On my left was a tall, bright, shiny silver wall or building. I could see the light shining very vividly against the silver.

It felt so calm, peaceful and looked absolutely beautiful. I then felt like someone or something was telling me to go back. I thought about my husband being paralyzed and still in the hospital. I knew my three children and husband needed me. I then was back in my car.

I realized a man was crouching down, next to my window. He was holding my hand telling me to just hang on and that I was going to be okay. I then remember the emergency workers using the jaws of life to cut me out of the car. They pulled me out of the car and putting me in the ambulance. The artery in my back was torn and filling my lungs with blood. I barely told them that I could not breathe anymore. I remember them putting chest tubes in my lungs to drain the blood so I could breathe again. I was life-flighted by helicopter to the same hospital my husband was at.

At the hospital, I saw the lights in the ceiling flying by as the gurney was pushed to rushed me inside. My entire body was in so much pain. Later, reviewing my medical records, it said my brain had ceased to function and that I was not breathing.

This is when I jumped to the other realm again. It looked exactly the same as before. This time, I heard from something or someone that it was my choice to stay or go back. The recent events of my life flashed through my mind and I knew my family needed me. So, I made the decision to go back.

The next thing I remember is waking up 3 days later in intensive care. They had put me in a medically-induced coma due to the pain and life threatening injuries I had suffered. I saw my aunt and cousin coming into the room and told my aunt as tears rolled down my face that I just saw God. My aunt cried to and thanked the Lord I was alive. My first thoughts were 'what happened to my daughter?' and 'was she okay?'

A nurse came in and told me she would be with me as soon as she could because they person in the next room over needed help. I could hear them trying to shock the person back to life and I never learned what happened.

The nurse then came back over and helped me check on my daughter who was in the pediatric unit. I learned that she broke 2 vertebrae in her lower back and she had surgery due to the seat-belt lacerating her intestines. She was doing great.

I learned that I had broken my C2 vertebrae in my neck, which is known as the hangman's fracture due to it being the bone that breaks when a person hangs themselves and it's usually deadly. My bone broke outwards instead of inwards sparing my spinal cord from being severed. I also broke my right femur, smashed my right knee cap which was removed and crushed my right foot. My left shin was also broken as well as several ribs. I had to wear a halo for 90 days to heal my neck fracture. I had multiple surgeries on my left leg to remove debris and have a titanium rod put in to help my femur break. My right foot had to be put back together like a jigsaw puzzle. The surgeon said I was very lucky that he was able to save it. I was in the hospital for a month and had to go through rehabilitation to learn how to live while being in a wheelchair. I pushed myself to recover as fast as I could to take care of my husband and children. Doctors said I wouldn't be able to walk without assistance for 2 years. I was on crutches in 4 months and walking in 6 months. My right leg is now 2 inches shorter than my left and I walk with a limp. I now suffer other complications from the accident.

But I know that I was in a special place, which has given me courage to share my near death experience and testimony that God is REAL!
