Experience Description
After the crash, I was in the back seat of the car. I knew I had snapped my femur because I could feel the ends of the bone when I tried to move. I had hit my head, near my eyebrow, on the front seat. The seat was an old, bench seat with a metal bar across it. I was bleeding a lot from my scalp because the glass from the other car flew through and hit me in the face. My eyes were full of glass shards, so I kept them closed when I could. I didn't lose consciousness at any point, so am unsure what level of concussion I would have had. I was aware of where I was and what had happened. After a few minutes, I began going into shock; tingling and shivering. Emergency vehicles and personnel started arriving on the scene and talking. I felt like I was going to lose consciousness, but resisted this because I was unsure whether it was going to be my last breath or not.
While this was happening, I then found myself somewhere else. I don't know how long in real time I was there, but felt like it was a few minutes.
I was standing in a desert, as I noticed the golden sand on the ground and a blue sky above. The desert was completely flat and extended for as far as I could see. But somehow, I knew it didn't end. The blue sky was clear, with no sun or clouds. I just stood there and looked at it, as there didn't seem any point in trying to run and see where the expanse ended or shouting to find anyone. I knew it was infinite, and it was just me there. I felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness. I realized that on the door of death, there was nobody around me. This happens because even if others are holding my hand, it's a journey I must make alone.
I'm agnostic but do feel that this experience had a bit of a purgatory vibe to it. I'm not sure how long the experience was in real time, but I ended up back in the car. An ambulance showed up and I went to hospital. I healed up and carried on with my life.
