Experience Description I was nearing my fourth year in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. It was November going into December of 2018. We had been in a field environment training as an opposing force for NATO counterparts for about a week. The weather was miserable. It had rained, snowed and hailed back and forth for the entirety of our time out there. Our equipment was soaked, despite waterproofing our gear. We were nearing our last day and 'the big fight' so we set into our guard positions. With our rotational guard up, I attempted to bed down in my sleep system. After nearly an hour, I woke up because it was so cold and wet. Around 1900, I made the decision that it would be safer to stay on guard until the fight came. For the next 7 hours I was with a friend. We were pacing and patrolling the javelin position that we were manning, in an effort to remain warm. Frostbitten and with cognitive functioning diminishing, fatigue set in. I sat against a tree and found comfort and warmth with my knees to my curled up to my chest. As the blizzard came, my consciousness began to fade. Instantly, the pain and cold were gone. Every pain and worry, every experience and moment were washed away. I met a bright flash and opened my eyes. My feet were bare and I was standing in tall, green grass and I was warm. As I looked up, I saw the most indescribable beauty of green, rolling hills and mayflower trees. I met the flash again and was pulled back out of this beautiful place. I awoke to my friend saying. 'Hey buddy! Hey! We're losing you! Get up!' I was again cold, wet and feeling pain again. I got up and began to pace in an effort to warm myself. After some time, I felt that my feet were on fire and this reassured me that my attempts were working. In hindsight, I now know that I was suffering from hypothermia and my body was failing. Again, I sat against the tree. I closed my eyes and began to fade. Again, I met the flash and experienced the same beauty and comfort as before. I was ripped back to the cold and pain by my friend who was attempting to save my life. This time a sergeant of mine had come to take me to a vehicle for treatment by the platoon medic. While on the other side, I met no people and I was only shown the other side of what I describe as the gate. I was only allowed to feel the comfort of being washed clean of my pain and life. I was never able to step forward and journey forward before being pulled back to my body.
