Experience Description

I was 4 years old, but retain a crystal-clear memory of the event. My mother left me in the car and took my sisters into the grocery store. She told me to stay in the car. I got out of the car and went into an alley beside the grocery store. As I was standing there, a garbage truck backed into a power pole, and it fell on my legs, breaking both of my legs at the ankles. The live wire struck me on the left shoulder and electrocuted me, setting my clothes on fire. The heat tattooed my shoulder and gave me a black mark, still recognizable to this day.

It was as if I had blinked and my perspective had changed. The best way to describe the sensation is that it was like the changing of a slide in a slide projector. First, I am looking through my eyes. Then, I am looking at myself on the ground from above. My body is pinned beneath the power pole, the wires are about me, and there is smoke in the air. I see myself so plainly from above, that I recognize myself. It is as if I was floating. I felt no pain, discomfort, or feelings of any sort. I was just floating.

I watched as the garbage truck driver lifted the power pole off of me, carried me into the grocery store, and placed me in a janitor's sink to extinguish the fire. The shock of feeling the cold water, changed my perspective changes like advancing to the next slide.

I'm back in my body looking through my eyes. The pain was so intense, that I went into shock. I woke up in the hospital with casts on both of my legs and bandages on my shoulder. It took 6 months for my bones to mend and the casts to be removed. Many years went by before I read about out-of-body experiences. However, the experience left such an impression on me, I never forgot it. It is still with me to this day. The experience was so surreal that I never told anyone until now.

I guess it could also be considered a significant emotional experience because it changed me. After this experience, I began to paint and draw pictures of abstract settings. I'm highly educated, grounded, and otherwise, a normal person.
