Experience Description

I was at a party and left. A guy who was mad at me about a female followed me outside. As I went to walk up the stairs, he shot me point blank in the back of my head. I could hear people screaming.

I was floating up and over the houses. I could feel the direction I was going in. When people were talking to me, it sounded like they were going farther away. When I responded, I could feel myself in my body and on the ground. As soon as I stopped talking, I was floating away again. This happened 3 or 4 times.

All of a sudden, I could feel the ambulance turning corners. The paramedics said, 'Are you with us Bud?' I asked, 'Are you going to help me?' He replied, 'We’re going to help you, Bud.' I couldn’t see. I got to shock-trauma at 10 pm. I couldn’t figure out what was happening and said to myself, 'I think I'm dead.

Later, a witness told me he heard me say that, 'You can’t kill me, only God can kill me.'

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Yes Surgery-related. Criminal attack. While under general anesthesia. Direct head injury. Life threatening event, but not clinical death. I was shot point bank in the head. The bullet crushed the back of my skull and penetrated 3cm into my brain.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Neither pleasant NOR distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? No I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? Less consciousness and alertness than normal. I kept feeling confused and couldn’t figure out what was happening

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? Whole time

Were your thoughts speeded up? No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning. There was no sense of time

Were your senses More vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Yes It was a pitch black plane, but I could see

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? No

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes Growing light coming for me. I ran from it

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm. It was a strange pitch-black realm but I could also see with no light

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Confusion

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Relief or calmness

Did you have a feeling of joy? No

Did you feel a sense of harmony or unity with the universe? No

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything? Everything about the universe. Nothing seemed to even matter

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a barrier that I was not permitted to cross; or was sent back against my will. The light wasn’t there at first but I walked towards it until it made me feel uneasy
