Experience Description In September of 1994, I had a mild cold prior to my experience. I also had a history of asthma. I soon realized that my cold symptoms were getting worse. I had a fever over 100F, was having difficulty trying to breathe, and felt a tightness in my chest. The symptoms went on for about 2 weeks and I wasn't getting any better. So, I drove myself to the doctor, accompanied by my mother. After being examined, the doctor said that I made the right decision in going to see him because my oxygen level was down to 20 percent. He sent me to have some chest x-rays, which showed that I had a severe infection on the left side of my chest. After reviewing the x-rays and the lab work, the doctor confirmed that I had severe bacterial pneumonia and needed to be hospitalized immediately. The doctor called ahead to let the hospital know that I would be soon arriving. I went back home, packed a small suitcase, and had my parents take me to the hospital. My mother went in with me and stayed until I was checked into a room. The doctor ordered more blood work, put me on oxygen, and started me on a broad spectrum of intravenous antibiotics. It was late in the afternoon, close to dinner time. As I lay there, I began to pray and asked God not to take me yet. I didn't want to die as I was a single mother with a 5-year-old daughter. Not long afterwards, I saw myself floating above my body. I watched the nurse come in to take my vitals. Then I was transported through a dark tunnel and saw a bright light at the end. An angel appeared before me, surrounded by beautiful, multi-colored light, and told me that it wasn't my time yet and that I still had work to do. Not sure how much time went by before I was back in my body, but I remember waking up with an overwhelming feeling of peace and love. I asked the nurse if she had been in the room recently to check my vitals and she confirmed that she had been. Not entirely sure if I wanted to relate my experience to this nurse and have her think I was dreaming or imagining things; I decided to keep it to myself. It was many years later when I decided to talk about my experience with my family. There have been 3 other times during my lifetime that I have almost died due to some kind of respiratory illness. The first was when I was 18 months old and put into an oxygen tent after having difficulty trying to breathe and was too young to remember if I had had an NDE. The second was in 1994 due to severe bacterial pneumonia. The third was in 2019 due to an asthma attack resulting in respiratory failure. During the third event I remember blacking out and then woke up in the emergency room with electrodes all over me. The nurse said that they were monitoring my heart. When I asked why, she didn't answer. I am uncertain at this point if I had experienced another NDE or not. It wasn't until after the fact, when I was back home recuperating that my daughter told me that I had coded three times in the ambulance. The EMTs had to give me an epinephrine shot three times before my heart returned to normal, sinus rhythm and I was back to breathing normally. Each and every day I am thankful to still be alive and continue on my quest to figure out what my life journey is and what God has in store for me.
