Experience Description I went to my obstetrician for a fever. I was also 6 months pregnant with my first child. The doctor saw me on his off hours and ran bloodwork. Within a few minutes, he told me that my white blood count was above 40,000. He suspected a ruptured bowel or appendix. Within 45 minutes, I was admitted to the hospital being prepped for surgery. The operating rooms were full. My doctor had called in a specialist, since surgery would require the monitoring of my child and retention in the uterus. Since this was an urgent procedure, the surgery was done in an actual hospital library that had been set up to perform the procedure. It turns out that my appendix had ruptured. The good news was that I was able to remain pregnant for the next 7 days. The bad news was that I became septic. Due to the abdominal cavity being infected, a C-section could not be performed. There was pus oozing from my incision. I delivered my daughter vaginally, with great difficulty. My daughter was ill, premature, and sent to the NICU. During the following days, my infection was unable to be suppressed. I was in and out of consciousness and don't recall everything that took place, during that time. My parents were flying in, from New York, due to the critical nature of my condition. They would not arrive for the next two days. One afternoon, I recall a nurse placing a plastic blanket over my body. It was an ice blanket, which I had never heard of. My temperature was uncontrolled and had reached 106 degrees, the last I recall. The ice blanket was intended to prevent any increase in fever as rising above 106 would risk brain damage. There were suction devices draining fluid from my abdomen. I was in a great deal of pain. I drifted out of consciousness, that afternoon. I opened my eyes and found my mother and father standing over the hospital bed. But, they were young. They appeared to be in their early thirties. At the time, my parents were in their early sixties. I remember telling my mom how pretty she was. She wiped sweat away from my forehead. Then, I peeked over the hospital bed and looked at the floor. It was an old black and white laminate flooring that appeared worn. I remember thinking that it wasn't the same floor that I recalled. My dad told me it was time to go, now. He and my mom each slowly pushed the hospital bed towards the door, which exits the room. The door was also old, and not the same door that I recalled. As we got closer to the door, I heard voices, outside the room. There was one, strong, Male voice and a bunch of other less pronounced, murmuring voices. The Male voice was in control and told the others to keep quiet. I remember him saying that I was almost there. The other voices excitedly whispered. As we got closer to the door, I could see bleachers against the wall. I peeked around the door. The people were different-sized balls of light. They changed shape, as if they moved when they spoke. The big Male ball of light had everyone keep quiet. As my parents were navigating to get the bed out of the doorway, they bumped the door and it shut with an audible sound. I heard a wave of disappointment from the beings in the hallway. When the door shut, I was enraged at my parents. This was not a common emotion as I don't recall my feeling such intense anger towards them before. Wanting to yell at my parents, I looked up at them. Instead of seeing my parents, there were nurses all over me. I was stripped naked and one big Female nurse was pushing on my chest. I had coded. The nurses wrapped me in warming blankets because I had gone so long without function that my temperature dropped from 106 to 97 degrees. I don't know how long that took. I eventually recovered, following some setbacks. My daughter survived after several months of hospital care. My parents arrived the day following this incident. I was still mad at them for something that they had no role in. I can't say how that changed me other than the fact that I am not afraid of death. I know that I will feel great peace and hope to see those beings again, because I know they will be happy.
