Experience Description

I was scheduled for a minor surgery of the right hand. The local anesthesia was not successful, so they followed it with administering a general anesthetic.

I 'woke up' hovering like a balloon, in the upper left corner of the surgery room. The current of the air-conditioner drew me towards the air outlet in that corner. I felt slightly pressed against the ceiling which prevented me from rising further. I saw the surgery-team around my body doing their work. There was no feeling of being connected with my body, which was as strange to me as any person of the surgery-team. I had never met any of them.

After some time watching, I felt a sudden jolt. I was waking up in a hospital bed with a man in white hospital outfit standing beside me.

I stated: 'You are the one who operated me.'

He said: 'Yes, but how do you know? We've never met before.'

I kept silent.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life Prior my immediate goal in life was to get as far as possible with a particular sport, playing in the highest national league. Besides that, I was very well on the way to become a high school teacher with a wife, 2 children, house, car and all that. In the same year I decided to go on a 3-month around the world trip instead of joining my team in the preparations for the next competitional season. 3 years later I dropped out of university, sold everything and went on an unlimited journey that resulted in becoming a Yoga teacher and missionary lasting until the year 2000. And so on.

Have your relationships changed specifically because of your experience? I do not try to escape personal issues any more by changing partners or friends. Yes

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes the important things happened during the black-out between the jolt and waking up in the hospital bed

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience Crystal clear and almost completely resistant to the wear and tear resulting from my personal associations and interpretations or the associations and interpretations of others.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes a kind of clairvoyance but related to the sense of touch

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The interval between blacking-out from the experience to waking up. Here is why: when coming in contact with information regarding topics like past-life, walk-in, channeling, dying, and birth. I have a kind a navigational system which quickly und beyond doubt connects me to the relevant parts of that information, if any. That navigational system has been installed during my black-out.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes About 3 years. I shared the experience only to the point of resistance in my dialogue partner(s). Whenever I sensed fear, disbelief or resistance I changed the topic. Meanwhile NDEs have become presentable and it is much easier to talk about it, but I basically stick to the same policy of not pushing it onto someone. I can sense other having had NDEs or strong peak-experiences (Maslow) that they keep partially suppressed, not yet allowing them to change their lives. This type of people ease up when I talk to them and consequently are more receptive towards the impeded changes within them.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? No

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real. I couldn't deny having recognized the surgeon, despite his wearing a surgery mask, while I was under general anesthetic.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real. By allowing myself to be true to the empirical reality of the experience - recognizing the surgeon - in spite of not being able to explain it scientifically, I learned to live with the mystery beyond our current beliefs, scientific result and accepted views. Though my reality meanwhile includes things beyond that, the mystery has not become smaller, it just changes. From that I get peace and joy, now.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience? Yes Being present at birth or death of other. Meditational states and other peak-experiences when thought, feelings, emotions cease to exist; they may occur even in conversations.

Are there any other questions that we could ask to help you communicate your experience? I am so glad being asked. Thank you so much for you courageous work. Meant as inspiration rather than improvement: I would make more room for the mystery that doesn't get smaller from being solved.
