Experience Description

I was doing an intense, group cross-fit workout when my cardiac arrest occurred. I could not catch my breath and asked the trainers to call 911. I then collapsed.

I started to feel like I was outside my body and could see people trying to help me and perform CPR. I had visions. I was not afraid and was aware that I was outside my body.

There was no automated external defibrillator (AED) in the gym. I received CPR for 7 to 8 minutes before first responder arrived. They brought an AED with them. The shock from the AED brought me back into my body and then things went extremely black.

I don't understand how I could see things happening around me from outside my body. In retrospect it is quite scary, but at the time I was not afraid. I will say the black I saw was the darkest black I have ever seen.

Turns out I was diagnosed with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy that was deemed idiopathic.

Did you feel separated from your body? No. I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? Normal consciousness and alertness. I was alert and aware that I was no longer in my body

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? I felt like I was away from my body standing there with everyone trying to help me, and then back into my body when things went very black.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Faster than usual

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Time seemed to go faster or slower than usual. Seemed like everything was happening slowly

Were your senses More vivid than usual? More vivid than usual

What emotions did you feel during the experience? I was very calm and felt at peace during the event. Since then, it has been an emotional journey. It has been a challenge to deal with

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life. I feel much more sympathetic to people and more emotional as well

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes After the event, the realization I had died and the fear I would not see my wife and family again has been a challenge

I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience. The memories from the event are extremely strong, and I was apparently unconscious for the entire time
