Experience Description

A tunnel opened and at the end of was a light such as I had never seen. There were people and deceased family members. I moved swiftly to the light and was very lucky. A figure, who looked like a a monk, stepped in front of me to prevent me from going further. I tried to step around him, but he held me back. It became clear that I had to go back. I woke up, disappointed.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Uncertain Illness Life threatening event, but not clinical death. I was sleeping and had a long breath stoppage due to sleep apnea.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. The 'monk', who stopped me from reaching the light, was filled with love and understanding but also very sure of his task to turn me back.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? When I was very near the light.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Faster than usual

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning. Time did not exist until the moment I was told I must return.

Were your senses More vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. Many times sharper than normal vision.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. Speech was without sound but yet very clear.

Did you seem to be aware of things going on elsewhere, as if by ESP? No

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Yes. I went through a tunnel made of some sort of stone. At the end was an unbelievably clear light. I could see beloved departed ones standing on the other side. I didn't have to walk because I drifted to the end of the tunnel.

Did you see any beings in your experience? I actually saw them

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings? Yes Deceased family members; my grandfather, grandmother and others who I didn't know.

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? An unusually bright light

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes So clear it could not be of the everyday world.

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm. I went to Heaven.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? I felt a deep sense of inclusion, disappointment at returning, and acceptance.

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Incredible peace or pleasantness

Did you have a feeling of joy? Incredible joy

Did you feel a sense of harmony or unity with the universe? I felt united or one with the world

What was your religion prior to your experience? Unaffiliated- Agnostic I doubt if most people know what is true and what is not.

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? Yes I'm sure of life after death. I'm studying spiritual matters and trying to gain as much knowledge as possible.

What is your religion now? Unaffiliated- Nothing in particular- Religious unaffiliated

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. Before the experience, I wasn't too sure about a life beyond death. Now, after this experience, it seems far more certain that there is.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Uncertain I'm not sure.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? I encountered a definite being, or a voice clearly of mystical or unearthly origin. The monk who turned me back might have been an Angel. We communicated without words.

Did you see deceased or religious spirits? I actually saw them

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)? No

During your experience, did you gain information about an afterlife? An afterlife definitely exists The deceased ones I saw led me to the conclusion there is life after death.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Moderate changes in my life. I started studying, seeking more spiritual information.

Have your relationships changed specifically because of your experience? Uncertain I can't really say whether I'm dealing with people in any different way.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience. I have a poor memory but I remember this experience in detail.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? No

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The departed ones in the Light. They gave me a greater conviction there is life after death.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? No

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? Yes I had heard and read about NDEs. I don't think it had any influence on my experience.

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real. I know this was a real experience. It was no dream or imagining.
