Experience Description

It was supposed to be a simple hysterectomy. My husband, who had a stroke was also hospitalized at the same hospital. For the sake of my children, I told the doctors that perhaps I should postpone my surgery because I did not want them to worry about both of us. My eldest child was not in the country, the second eldest did not live in the area, and the third, 18 years old, lived with his father and witnessed the stroke.

Both doctors agreed it was okay to have the surgery. Apparently, I was fatally allergic to the anesthetic. There was no one waiting for me when I got out of surgery, which is important because no one was there to be informed that I was in the ICU. I guess I never came to, as the next thing I remember is this vision:

I was in a small room, lying on a cart. There was a doctor in khakis and a corpsman in whites. The doctor was very upset and was ordering the corpsman to get him things. I was above them, very calm, and witnessed what they were doing. I felt sorry for them; I kept thinking, "Oh, don't worry. It's okay." The doctor then said he had to give me a shot in the heart and apparently did.

I felt very peaceful and began to move forward toward a light. I really wanted to go and not stop. The next thing I knew, I was awake and did not remember the NDE until weeks later. I was heavily medicated.

I didn't talk about it to anyone because I thought it was some kind of dream. The doctor told me that I had a hard time after surgery. He told me to make sure the medication name was in RED on my chart and that I should never be given it again. No one was told that I had been taken to the ICU.

Years later, when I decided to have bunion surgery, my daughter who was a nurse called to find out what that medication was before the doctor would schedule the surgery. When we received the files and found the name of the medication, we were told that they do not use that medication anymore.

In reading the file and the results of my surgery, nothing was mentioned about my being in the ICU. I know it happened and I do talk about it. The outcome for me is that I am not afraid to die. I can still feel that pull towards something beautiful and how much I wanted to go there. I can still feel the hovering over that doctor and his assistant and how sorry I was that they were so upset. I wanted them to know that I was going to be okay. I do believe that there is someplace we go that is beautiful.
