Experience Description

I was diagnosed with stage three rectal cancer in May 2012. I began rigorous chemotherapy and radiation treatment for the entire months of June and July 2012. During this period of time, I lost twenty-two pounds which brought my weight down to eighty-eight pounds. After my last round of chemotherapy in July, I was admitted into the hospital for a high fever, dehydration and colitis. I was in the hospital in isolation for a week while continuing my daily radiation treatment. When I was released, I was told I had to return to the hospital in three days for blood to be drawn.

While walking out of the hospital after getting my blood drawn, I passed out and landed square on my face and chin. My husband was with me and he started shouting my name and begging for someone to come and help. He told me later that I stopped breathing completely for a few minutes.

During this time, I had no idea of what was happening in the real world. All I felt and knew was a great peace, a calm. I did not know where I was, but I had never felt such peace and calm in my life. Nothing hurt, and all I wanted to do was rest and not leave that place because what I was feeling was like no feeling I had ever felt before and I knew Jesus was there with me because I heard myself saying, 'Jesus, I don't want to leave.'

Then I heard my husband, faintly, shouting my name to wake up, and I fought it. I tried to stay where I was with Jesus, but his shouting finally got through to me. At that point, I knew that because someone was shouting my name, I had to 'go back.' My husband was crying and telling me that I had stopped breathing and I had just laid there very still. Back in this reality again, I remained in a peaceful, calm state because of where I had just come from, and I was not afraid.

The experience included: Out of body experience

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes I heard my husband shouting, but only after several moments. I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal It was so clear and like nothing I had ever felt before.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? When I felt calm and peaceful and knew I was there with Jesus.

Were your thoughts speeded up? No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning

Were your senses more vivid than usual? More vivid than usual

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. I am a believer in Jesus Christ and God, but had never experienced such a closeness to them as I felt during that experience.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. I could hear very well within the world where I was, but for a momentary time I could not hear my husband shouting. All I heard was myself saying that I didn't want to leave the peace and calm.

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? Some unfamiliar and strange place I didn't see a clear place, only knew that I was with Jesus in a peaceful place.

Yes I shared it with my husband, but not until a few days after because I didn't want to scare him, and also because I was dealing with so much pain and healing after my cancer treatments that it took a lot out of me even just to think about a lot at one time.
