Experience Description

At some point during my experience of giving birth, I was aware that the atmosphere changed and there seemed to be a medical emergency. I could feel blood pooling in my chest (I was having a c'sarean and the lower half of my body was paralyzed from the epidural anesthetic). All at once, I felt the essence of myself/ the thinking part, separate from my body. My consciousness seemed to be heading somewhere. At that moment, I heard my daughter cry and I willed myself to reenter my body. When this happened, I remember saying, 'Back down to Earth again!' I was hemorrhaging massively during childbirth and the doctors and nurses were finding it hard to stop the blood flow.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Yes Childbirth Life threatening event, but not clinical death I was hemorrhaging massively during childbirth and the doctors and nurses were finding it hard to stop the blood flow.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Neither pleasant NOR unpleasant and/or frightening

The experience included: Out of body experience

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes Yes I heard all that the doctors were saying. I can't recall if my vision was enhanced. The birth of my twins. I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal I was totally present in my mind and very aware of the fact that I was heading somewhere.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? When I was out of my body.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Incredibly fast

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was entirely not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience I had never considered that my consciousness could separate from my body.

Do you believe in an afterlife after your experience? An afterlife definitely exists Yes I felt that if I had not willed my consciousness back into my body, I would have left it altogether for somewhere else.

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes My 'consciousness' left my body. I was and am sure of that. It is hard to describe how that felt, but this was the reality and I was not hallucinating.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes I was visited by my recently deceased brother. I felt his energy within my body attempting to let me know he was okay.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The reality of the experience and my absolute certainty that this was my brother.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes In the months after the experience I told a couple of close friends and my sister. They said they knew I was telling the truth, but they couldn't imagine what it would feel like.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? No

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real It felt unlike a dream and was not due to drugs. I was very alert and aware of what was happening.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real My memory of it has faded, but I still have no reason to believe it was not real.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience? Yes My brother's visitation.
