I was sedated on the operating room table and under the effects of epidural anesthesia. Well into the surgery, I started feeling a pressure in my stomach that turned into nausea then suddenly disappeared. The surgical team later commented that at that moment I said, ‘I'm getting dizzy’ but I was not aware of having said it. Around me, I began to realize that everything was becoming dark and I could not open my eyes. Sounds became slower, as if from afar. To my right I heard the pulse oximeter checking my pulse. Every beep was becoming slower, and every time it sounding farther away. I wondered what was going on while my body sank into deep relaxation and began feeling an intense well-being, peace and tranquility within myself. Everything went absolutely black. I didn’t hear or see anyone. I saw no lights, no stairs, heard no voices. I would have died happily at that time. I wanted to die. I felt no fear. I know what it feels like to die and I'm ready. Then I went into respiratory arrest. They interrupted surgery and blamed it on a vasovagal attack. They were able to revive me and I woke suddenly, as one wakes up in the morning in bed, but happy and peaceful.
