Experience Description

I died 4 years ago from a heart attack.

I arrived by ambulance at the hospital. I was lying on the hospital bed and as they were putting IV lines into me. My heart stopped for 2 minutes, before I was revived.

I knew I was going to die before it happened because something was telling me it was the end. For a moment, I became very fearful and regretful of leaving my family.

Then I became calm and accepting that I was going to die. My entire life flashed before me, like a really quick film. I saw all the good things and bad things that I had done.

And then it happened. I died. All I remember was that there was no sound and all I could see was darkness. It wasn't like normal dark; it was just utterly black and completely silent. I was nothing and nowhere, yet I was aware.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? No. I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. I got to remember all my past, like a fast film.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? Right up until my heart stopped. But I do remember the darkness.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Incredibly fast

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? No

Were your senses More vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? Some unfamiliar and strange place. I was in a darkness; darker than dark and there was no sound.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Every bloody emotion known possible.

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Relief or calmness

Did scenes from your past come back to you? My past flashed before me, out of my control. Before my heart stopped my entire life was shown to me at an incredible speed.

What was your religion prior to your experience? Christian- Catholic Only as a child I went to church. I don't bother now, as I do not believe.

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. I didn't have any expectations.
