Experience Description

My near-death experience happened 30 years ago, but I still can remember it as if it happened only yesterday.

At the time I was 14 years old. I had bad bronchitis and hadn't been to school in days. The day I had the near-death experience was on mother's day and my grandparents, with whom I had a very close relationship, came to visit.

I was lying down in my bed and in my room. I felt very sluggish from the bronchitis and was very apathetic. I can still remember looking at the ceiling when I felt a state of weightlessness. Then I realized that I was floating towards the ceiling. From above, I looked down and saw my body lying in bed. I did not feel afraid; it felt so normal and easy. I felt like I was held, safe, and loved.Then everything around me became very luminously bright and a warm light pervaded everything. I saw a brightly shining circle whose edges dissolved into soft, yellowish-red colors. In my head I heard a voice. It told me that I could decide if I wanted to stay forever up here in the light or if I wanted to go back to my body.

A I thought about what I wanted to do, I noticed that below myself the door of my room opened. I saw my beloved grandma peeking through to check on me. I suddenly felt that I wanted my heart back in my body because I loved my family so much.

Again, I heard the voice in my head. It said, 'When you are back in your body you have to tell your grandma that you need to get quickly to a hospital, otherwise you will not survive.' Then everything happened very fast. I left the warm, bright, and safe light and found myself back in my body. To my grandma I said that I needed to go very fast to the hospital because I felt so bad.

I still can remember that my father carried me down the stairs. I collapsed and woke up at the hospital, connected to tubes and a respirator. The doctors said that the bronchitis had developed into a life-threatening pneumonia. I had only 5% oxygen left in my blood. Later on they said, had I arrived only 15 minutes later at the hospital I would have died.

Since this experience, my grandma and I had an even deeper connection. When she died at almost 90 years of age, a very psychic lady from my relationships got in touch with me. She told me that in the night when my grandma died, she appeared at her place with a message to tell me. She wanted me to know that where she is now, she is fine. That she is happy to be with grandpa and that she loves me very deeply.

Since the experience of my near-death I'm dealing very much with the soul, with death and near-death experiences of other people. It opened a spiritual way for me, that I'm very grateful about. I have lost the fear of dying.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Yes Illness. Life threatening event, but not clinical death. I had an undetected pneumonia.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Entirely pleasant

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes The results were real. I clearly left my body and existed outside it

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. I had the feeling of being able to perceive everything.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? I was conscious, only very weak and listless.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Faster than usual

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning. I felt no sense of time. Yet, somehow everything happened simultaneously.

Were your senses More vivid than usual? More vivid than usual

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? A light clearly of mystical or other-worldly origin

Did you see an unearthly light? Yes A very warm, bright and all-encompassing shining light. I saw and felt it everywhere.

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm. Everything was so infinite, beautiful, bright and warm. Love was everywhere.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? I felt cared for, free and loved.

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Incredible peace or pleasantness

Did you have a feeling of joy? Happiness

Did you feel a sense of harmony or unity with the universe? I felt no longer in conflict with nature

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything? Everything about myself or others. I understood that I could have stayed in the light, but also I understood how sick my body was.

Did scenes from your past come back to you? No

Did scenes from the future come to you? No

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a definite conscious decision to return to life. From above, I saw my grandma who I loved so very much, and I wanted to get back into my body.

What was your religion prior to your experience? Christian- Protestant

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? I continued my education with learning Reiki and I'm meditating.

What is your religion now? unknown

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was entirely not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. At the time I was only 14 years old and hadn't had any thoughts about life after death.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? No

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? I heard a voice I could not identify. The voice was talking to me, but I heard it in my head.

Did you see deceased or religious spirits? No

During your experience, did you gain information about premortal existence? No

During your experience, did you gain information about universal connection or oneness? Yes. I believe that through the light, I would have reached another place.

During your experience, did you gain information about the existence of God? Yes I heard this voice that seemed all-knowing.

During your experience, did you gain information about the meaning of life? Yes That life has a meaning in mastering assignments and developing myself more.

During your experience, did you gain information about an afterlife? I was uncertain if an afterlife exists. I realized that my consciousness continues to exist outside of my body.

During your experience, did you gain information about love? Yes It was like an all-encompassing love, with which I should strive to live in also on earth.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life. Since this experience I'm dealing with near-death experiences and spirituality.

I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience. I still have this experience in my memory. It changed me.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes I'm more sensitive and sometimes I have premonitions.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? To experience such a great love.

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real. Everything happened while I was very aware, otherwise I wouldn't remember it with as much detail anymore.
