Experience Description

I was 17 years old, on a date with my then boyfriend and our friend. After seeing a movie, we were required to cross a four lane highway to get back to our parked car. We were standing in the turning lane, as I bent down to fix my shoe lace, a Jeep Wagoneer, crossed two lanes of travel and struck me in the turning lane. I was thrown into the air, and landed on the pavement on my face.

I did wake up and remember thinking, it’s so bright, but it was midnight, and it was so cold, but it was the middle of June. I was taken to the hospital, where it was found that I had multiple trauma and life-threatening injuries requiring immediate surgery. I remember waking up as the surgeon was beginning the surgery, I felt like I was being ripped apart.

At some point, I had no discernible heart beat and my pupils were fixed and dilated. During this time, I found myself in a extremely dark, warm, peaceful place, for lack of a better word, I couldn’t see anything, but I wasn’t afraid. I felt a “presence” but I couldn’t see anything. I had no fear, although I was confused.

I spent a month in the hospital.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal I felt as if I would be okay despite the confusion I was feeling.

What was your religion prior to your experience? Unaffiliated- Nothing in particular- Religious unaffiliated I was baptized Methodist, but my mother did believe in religion

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? Yes I’m more connected to the universe and my relationship with God.

What is your religion now? Other or several faiths Spiritual

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was entirely not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Yes I am more open to understanding and try to put love and compassion into the world.

Did you see deceased or religious spirits? I sensed their presence

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life For a time I “forgot” this experience, I was young, in turmoil, had no support system. When one day in my early 20’s I had a flashback of the experience and kind of chalked it up to something significant but I was still not open enough to understand. I became a hospice nurse and I had a spiritual awakening in my life and now I have a better understanding of what I experienced and why I may have gone through the experience.

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes How do you explain a darkness, darker than any darkness you’ve seen in your life, to express the experience correctly?

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes In my position as a hospice nurse, I can sense when a person is dying by a sensation I get in my body.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? I truly can’t find words to express how it felt or how it changed me.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes 35 yrs., and most people look at me and don’t believe.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? No

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real I know it was real, because I had no prior life experience to say otherwise.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real Many things have happened in my life since. If it hadn’t happened, I may not be able to assist others when facing their death.
