Experience Description We went out for a friend's birthday, at a DJ event in Manchester, England. We had decided to rent an apartment in the city for the night since most of us were living with parents at the time. We drank alcohol in the apartment, before going out. During the event, several of us took ecstasy in pill form, which was something we were accustomed to. This particular night, I couldn't quench the appetite for more. I found myself going round the venue. I was trying to purchase more, from whoever was there. I did manage to buy more and consumed an amount that was far greater than anything I had taken before. At the time, I was slightly over-weight, but generally healthy. I remember dancing and feeling my heart beat harder and faster than ever before. After the event, we returned to the flat where several of us began to consume cocaine. We also were huffing laughing gas balloons, something I was also quite accustomed to doing for some years prior to the event. Huffing on laughing gas is known to induce a buzzing feeling through the body, somewhat due to the lack of oxygen getting to the brain, but quite often the nitrous oxide could induce hallucinations. At the time of the event, about 4 or 5 of us went into one of the bedrooms, dimmed the lights, put some music on and laid back onto the bed, while huffing the balloon of laughing gas back and forth. The usual feeling of buzzing through the body started, but almost instantly stopped. I had a top down view of the room, looking down at each individual. I completely lost all feeling of intoxication. As clear as day, I could hear the voice in my head say, 'You're dead. That's it, you've died.' These short sentences repeated a few times, but definitely not rushed or in a panic. They repeated in a slow and calm manner. I didn't feel any kind of sadness or shock, just a very calm knowing or understanding. I also heard the voice in my head say, 'What's mum going to think? and dad, and Ewan?' (my brother) and 'What are you going to do?' But again, at no point did I have any nerves, panic, or feelings of sadness. I was very calm, felt almost warm, understanding, and acceptance. It felt like around 10-15 seconds before I opened my eyes and was back in my body. My friend's fingers were in my mouth. He explained that he thought I was suffocating on my balloon because my body was convulsing. I instantly knew and was adamant that this was no hallucination or dream-like state. My senses during the event were as clear as they are as I sit here now. Years later, I read that nitrous oxide can induce death due to the lack of oxygen. Since the event, almost from the day after it happened, I found my personality start to change from someone who was quite egotistical and brash to one more calm and appreciative; especially an appreciation of existence and that every day is a gift. Only when listening to Doctor Long talk on Theo Von's podcast explaining about the overwhelming numbers of people describe the same out of body experience, looking down on their body and surroundings with the same calm feeling, did I feel I had confirmation that I had, indeed, had a near death experience. Although my experience did not progress onto anything described by Dr Long on the podcast, with regards to a tunnel, loved ones and a realm many would call an afterlife. Since listening to the podcast, and from my own experience. I am almost certain that what people have described is well within the realm of possibility. I have found comfort in knowing that when we die, there is more to come for our souls and spirits.
