Experience Description

At the time, my wife was suffering from liver failure, but I knew nothing about it. I came home from work on Saturday, December 29 to find that her legs were all swollen. I told her that she needed to go to the hospital, but she said that she did not want to go. She said she just wanted to lie down, so I put her in bed. It was about nine o'clock at night. I lay down beside her and went to sleep. When I woke up at around four in the morning to check on her, I saw that she was not breathing. I went into a state of panic and tried to give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but it was too late. I called 911 and then passed out.

While passed out, I found myself flying into puffy clouds that were in a vividly blue sky, and then I was at the ocean near high cliffs. I also remember feeling complete bliss. I did not have to worry about anything anymore! Then all of a sudden, I felt like I was being pushed back into my body. I started hearing the 911 operator yelling, ‘Sir, are you all right? Sir, are you all right?’ That's when I woke up. My heart started racing because the reality of what had just happened to my wife came crashing back.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Yes Illness, trauma or other condition not considered life threatening My wife had passed away right next to me in bed. Upon awakening I saw her. That's when it happened. I don't know if I passed out or I died and came back again.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Both pleasant AND distressing

The experience included: Out of body experience

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes I saw a vivid blue sky, clouds, and the ocean while passed out. It was part of my experience. I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? When I saw the clouds and blue sky.

Were your thoughts speeded up? Incredibly fast

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning

Were your senses more vivid than usual? Incredibly more vivid

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? Some unfamiliar and strange place I was flying into the clouds in the sky, and then the next moment, I was by the sea.
