Experience Description

I was 11 years old and it was an extremely hot, Sunday. My aunt and uncle had come to visit. We were going to go to the Jersey shore as soon as my Dad came home. I took the dog on a long walk so he wouldn't have to go in the house while we were gone. I was sweating by the time we returned.

My dad had a super-8 camera and projector that he had taught me how to use. My mom asked me if I could get one of our family films to play. I leaned over the projector and began to feed the film in, but it became jammed. I leaned over to try to get the film straightened out. But somehow, I looked directly into the light. I felt a jolt, then I attempted to stand but my vision was affected. I saw colors in front of my eyes. I called out to Mom. She came running from the kitchen with my uncle.

The light was getting brighter and brighter. I felt my consciousness growing distant from them. I could hear them, but I couldn't respond. Soon, I was above them. I wanted to go back to my family but I couldn't reach them. I was so scared. Then everything went black. I woke up in a hospital emergency room. Apparently, I had died or nearly died and had to be resuscitated three times. I spent ten days in the hospital, undergoing many tests. They were uncertain of the exact cause.

What I can say is that this experience altered my life.

At the time of your experience, was there an associated life-threatening event? Uncertain. Illness Other: I am not quite sure of the cause, but my mom said that I had to be resuscitated three times, but I cannot remember this part.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Entirely distressing

Did you feel separated from your body? Yes I saw my mother in distress and calling my name. I couldn't respond to her. I felt sad and scared. I wanted to go to her. I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal. I felt out of control but extremely heightened emotionally.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? floating over my family

Were your thoughts speeded up? Faster than usual

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning. I lost track of how long it was.

Were your senses More vivid than usual? More vivid than usual

Did you see an unearthly light? Uncertain. The light was bright but I am not sure if it was unearthly.

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm. I was not in the earthly world and there was a barrier that I couldn't break through.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? Fear and anxiety.

Did you come to a border or point of no return? I came to a definite conscious decision to return to life. I fought to come back.

What was your religion prior to your experience? Christian- Catholic

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? Yes I have been a seeker my entire life.

What is your religion now? Other faiths- New age I adhere to Catholic customs but I also have adopted some other beliefs

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was entirely consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience. I became more religious after this and began to read many spiritual books.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? Yes I became aware of others and committed to being a helper in life.

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? No

During your experience, did you gain information about an afterlife? Uncertain I didn't realize it at the time but after this experience, I have psychic or death-related awareness.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life I had a heightened awareness and could sense people.

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes I blacked out. When I woke up, I was very confused about where I was and what had transpired.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience. This experience haunted me for a long time.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes I have many stories of receiving warnings, guides and early notifications of loved ones who would be passing.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? the feeling that I was chosen to walk in between two worlds.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes Right away, we all tried to process what had occurred and wondered if it would happen again. But, I never had a convulsion again.
