Experience Description

I was 5 years old and had gone to the hospital for a tonsillectomy. My sister was also having a tonsillectomy surgery the same day.

In the night, I awoke with the need to vomit. I took the pink pan from the table at my bedside and preceded to vomit blood for what felt like a long time. My sister was not in her bed next to me, so I was alone. I collapsed onto the bed, the bowl spilling over with blood. When a nurse came into the room, she quickly left. I recall being rolled onto a clean bed quickly. I recall the lights on the ceiling moving. I saw a large black mask that smelled like rubber that was used to put me to sleep for emergency surgery.

I woke up in a dark space, still on my back but I floating. Attached to me was a string similar to a guitar string. There were other strings floating there. I seem to have been floating over and under the other people's strings but I never touched them. Just as I felt like I was waking up, even though I was still in the dark space or becoming more aware, I started to feel fear. I wanted my mother. I closed my eyes and felt dizzy.

When I opened my eyes, I was in the hallway of the hospital. I was holding on to the railing on the wall to steady myself, because I felt very strange and weak. I had recalled a playroom behind the nurses desk, and I wanted my sister. I was still very afraid. I made it to the nurses desk and looked behind into the playroom and my sister wasn't there. However, there was a boy who looked to be my age, sitting on the floor, legs crossed, and reading a book. I did not know him. He looked up and smiled and waved at me. I started to collapse against the wall when a nurse caught me in her arms and kindly said, 'What are you doing here, sweetheart?' I told her that I wanted my sister and she picked me up with both arms saying, 'You don't belong here. Lets get you back to where you belong.' I closed my eyes in her arms, felt the bed beneath me, and I woke up several days later still in the hospital.

The incident was so bad that I struggled to eat my entire life and have been on a complete liquid diet and occasional puree foods, and have had to have many surgeries to keep my throat open due to the scar tissue from the tear. I was not breathing for 4 minutes. It felt like it was much longer.
