Experience Description I was in bed, ill with swine flu. It was about 2:00 am. I entered a very dark room and heard a door, bang shut behind me. There was a bright light that stretched from the ground and reaching up as far as I could see. I took two steps towards the light. I landed on a platform, next to the light that shot me straight upwards at lightning speed. The platform was just big enough for one person to stand on. The platform stopped at the top of the light. It was pitch-dark but I saw what looked like a bright white stage about 20 to 30 feet from me. Everyone and everything on the stage was white. My dad stood at the front of the stage and my cousin Colin was standing slightly behind my dad and to the left. Colin had a very straggly, dark beard from his jawline down. I had never seen him with such a beard when he was alive. His beard was the only thing on the stage that was not bright white. At the back of the stage, that was built into the wall, there was a very old woman who I didn’t recognize. I could tell she was clearly in charge and was monitoring everything that was going on. My dad was the only one to speak to me. Even though it was 15 years ago, I remember his exact words, 'If you want to see Colleen and those boys again, you better go straight back down. You better start breathing and you better start fighting!' With that, I started to fall. As I looked up, I saw my dad reach over the stage and say, 'We’ll still be here if you need us.' The I landed back in my bed with a thud and took a deep breath. I was in the exact center of our bed, in the fetal position. I have sleep apnea and never sleep without my c-pap machine, but I was not wearing it when I returned. I was using it when I fell asleep earlier. I spent the rest of the night breathing and fighting like my dad told me to do. Colleen was sleeping in the spare room, while I was sick. The next morning, I told her I need to be in the hospital. She drove me to the hospital and spent 5 days in the ICU. At the hospital, they put me in a private room and the TV was on to a local news station. The only thing they were discussing were people who had died of the swine flu. The doctor came in and said 'I’m going to do my best to save your life but I can’t guarantee it'. When I was leaving the hospital 5 days later she said, 'When I first saw you, I thought there was no way that you were going to survive.'
