Experience Description

On the night of February 6th and morning of February 7th, I went to the bathroom twice with no problems. Then about 4am I went again and experienced this shooting pain from the ball of the left foot with serious pain in the calf. I could hardly walk to the toilet. After going back to bed, the pain from the ball of the foot went away, but the pain in the calf was still there. I massaged the calf to try to lower the pain level. About 4:30am, I began having trouble breathing. I woke my wife and told her to call 911 because I thought I was having a heart attack. She freaked out, but did call 911. The paramedics got here and checked me out to see if I could survive a trip to the hospital emergency room. The put me in the ambulance, inserted an IV in me, and started giving me fluid and oxygen. I would estimate that it took 10 to 15 minutes to get to the hospital.

I went immediately into an emergency waiting room. I had an ultrasound on my left calf area. The ultrasound showed deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in the leg from the knee down to the ankle. Next a CT scan was done in my lung area. They found a large clot located between my lungs. This is called a pulmonary saddle embolism. With that finding, an IV heparin drip was ordered to start reducing and preventing additional blood clotting.

After a period of time, a doctor came to discuss the situation. He was a specialist from another hospital. He explained that there were three choices. He could attempt to use medication to clear the clot. He did not recommend this because of the size of the clot. He could go in through the groin, up to the lung area and remove the clot. He would need to put me under anesthesia. The last option was for me to stay awake during the procedure. He said this option is the one they have had the best success with. After discussing my options with my wife, I decided to stay awake during the procedure.

They wheeled me to the operating room before the room is prepared. I am just amazed how much equipment and items are used for a medical procedure. Towels, clothes, pillows, tubing and items I can’t even explain. Finally, they are ready to start the procedure. The doctor told me that they would use a local anesthesia to help me with pain. The most painful part was when they cut the vein or artery on my right groin. They didn’t bother to tell me that they needed an incision on both sides of the groin. The incision on the left groin was just as painful as the right side. I am glad they used a local anesthesia. I don’t know how intense the pain would have been without it.

After a period of time, I am starting to feel bad. I shout out, 'How much longer?' The doctor says, 'Maybe 20 to 30 minutes.' I groan. I hear from someone in the room, 'Doctor his blood pressure is dropping.' I get to the point, I don’t know whether I can continue and was at the point of giving up. I thought I was breathing my last breath. This is when I had experience. I don't know where I was. But what I felt during that time was peace - Total Peace. I never felt this in my 80 years of life. This feeling is unexplainable. It was the best feeling of total peace.

I don’t know what happened or what they did, but I started to recover and feel better. The procedure lasted maybe 20 minutes longer and then I heard the doctor say. 'We are finished Thomas'. I was relieved.

Five or 10 minutes later, the doctor started talking to me. He told me that the clot they removed was one of the biggest clots he'd ever dealt with, and I was a good patient. I asked the doctor, 'I heard my blood pressure was dropping.' I asked him, 'How low did it go?' There was a pause, and then he said, 'You don’t want to know, and I am not going to tell you.' I never did find out how low my blood pressure got. As the conversation continued, the doctor said, 'You know Thomas, I think we made the right decision. I am afraid if you had gone under anesthesia, I am believing we would have lost you.' I didn’t know what to say about that comment. Now, I can say that I was standing in front of death's door and Death was holding the door open. I was given a second chance in life. As my wife says, 'Your room wasn’t ready yet.' Now my job is to find out why I was given another period of life and find out what is expected of me with this second chance.

One of the assisting doctors must have used compression on the wound for around 45 minutes until it stopped bleeding. Then they wheeled me into an ICU room. During the trip to the ICU room, I attempted to raise my head. The doctor yelled at me, 'Don’t do that! You must remain flat on your back until the incisions heal.' Although I was in the ICU room until the afternoon of February 9th. I do not remember much about the time in ICU. Finally, they discharged me from the hospital on Friday, February 10th. In the following months, I have had follow-up appointments, wear a heart monitor, and was tested for sleep apnea. The last test was an echocardiogram. They wanted to make sure the blood clot did not leave any long-term damage. All the tests showed there was no long-term damage.

In conclusion, I feel that I dodged death and had a preview of time after life on this earth. The only thing I have noticed is that my endurance is shorter now and I tend to get tired sooner. The moral of the story is that if you ever wake up in the middle of the night with a painful cramp in your calf, do not massage the calf to attempt to relieve the pain. The speculation is, when I massaged my cramp, a large portion of the clot broke loose. It migrated between my lungs and with the constriction and the blood flow slowing down, the clot just became larger. The doctors said I was very fortunate to survive a clot of this size. Now I must figure out why I was given another chance of survival. Since my survival, I have not felt that feeling of PEACE, TOTAL PEACE. I strongly believe that I was given a preview of time after death.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? I would say most the time. When I was experiencing my near death, I did not know where I was.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Large changes in my life. After my event I feel there is a reason for surviving and now I am searching for the reason for my survival. This is a reason I am sharing my experience with this site and other platforms.

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes It was an experience that I never experienced before in my 80 years of life. I never experienced PEACE, TOTAL PEACE!

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience. This was a life changing experience for me, and I am always thinking and trying to analyze this event even after a year and a half.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? No

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? THE PEACE, TOTAL PEACE is especially important to me, and I want to feel that again

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes I started sharing it immediately after the event. I have posted it on my website https://tomt2.com/2024/05/25/peace/ and shared it with many face-to-face. It is hard to say if it influenced anyone. Some gave me the impression that they thought 'what is he smoking?' Others have really acted enthusiastically that I shared and thanked me for sharing

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real I immediately thought that I experienced a preview of time after life.
