Experience Description I was taken to the emergency room after an excruciating lower back condition; bulging discs and stenosis. When I arrived in the emergency room. I was in intense pain. I had a DNR (do not resuscitate order) in place as I do not wish to be kept on life-support. I know several people this has happened to. It is devastating for them as they eventually died and and for the family. My wife was out of town visiting friends. The emergency room physician informed me that I needed morphine, as I was going into shock due to pain. I told her no oxygen use per DNR protocol. She informed me I could stop breathing and die as a result. She took down the names of witnesses in the emergency room that I clearly communicated that I did not want oxygen. She overestimated my weight by nearly 30 pounds and gave me a higher dose IV of morphine than I should have had. I then passed out. Shortly thereafter, I could see myself and the emergency room physician, nurses, and police officers who helped me into the emergency room. From the ceiling, I saw them panicking. They were yelling my name, knuckling my sternum, and hitting my ribcage in an effort to get me breathing again. I then left the ceiling and entered a bright area, as though going through an incandescent lightbulb. I then had the most wonderful feeling of my lifetime. I was embraced by another Being, as warmth spread throughout my entire being. I realized that I had died and was moving toward or entering heaven. If I took the three greatest moments of my life, my wedding day and the birth of my two children, and multiply them by 1,000, that sum would not come close to the feeling of entering heaven. Just as I was about to be fully enveloped and pulled into this incredibly warm and comforting existence, I felt as if I were being thrown upside down by a rollercoaster. Suddenly, I regained partial consciousness on the gurney in the emergency room. I heard the frantic emergency room physician yelling and cursing. I saw the wide-eyed nurses and the police officers. Later, they told me that I had stopped breathing for about 3 to 4 minutes. They were hitting me to stimulate rebreathing as I had signed my DNR prior to the administration of the morphine in my IV. Later that day, my private physician came to my room and said I needed to change my DNR because, technically, I had died in the emergency room. I told him after what I experienced, that it wasn't from the morphine according to my physician and other physicians there. I not only will not change that DNR, but was disappointed to return because the afterlife was so wonderful. I had 3 nurses and techs come to my room during my two-day stay and ask me about my experience because they had heard about my NDE.
