Experience Description

At the time of the event, I was in conversation with a man whom I loved and trusted completely. The man later told me that he loved me as well, but at the time of the event, our feelings had not yet been expressed.

We were sitting and talking across from each other. He was telling me about his mother and how she had to flee Europe as a teenager with only a few hours' notice from her parents. I felt a great deal of empathy for his mother as he spoke. At a certain point, he looked into my eyes. I think he realized that I loved him. He became still and looked intently into my eyes.

At that moment, my vision was filled with blue light. I had the sensation of rushing into a tunnel filled with that same light. As the sensation faded, I found myself in a different dimension. I felt connected to him but couldn’t see him. I could only feel him as a warm presence that was somehow connected to me, like holding hands without contact. It was dark around us, but I could see a world laid out below me, with stars or points of light scattered in the darkness. There was also another presence there. Although, I couldn’t see it, I could only feel it. That presence seemed surprised and amused by us. I felt a deep sense of exhilaration. As I gazed at the world below, I got a sense of how everything worked, that there were plans and a sense of purpose, and I also experienced self-realization about what I was capable of. At that point, I felt a probing from him, as if he were trying to go deeper into me or into the experience somehow. I felt a stab of fear, and immediately the connection was broken, and we came back to earth.

How do you consider the content of your experience? Entirely pleasant

Did you feel separated from your body? No I lost awareness of my body

How did your highest level of consciousness and alertness during the experience compare to your normal everyday consciousness and alertness? More consciousness and alertness than normal I had the sensation that I understood the workings of the universe, that there were plans and concepts at work, both in the past and in the future.

At what time during the experience were you at your highest level of consciousness and alertness? while we were in the other dimension

Were your thoughts speeded up? No

Did time seem to speed up or slow down? Everything seemed to be happening at once; or time stopped or lost all meaning I had no sensation of time at all. I have absolutely no idea how long the experience took in real time.

Were your senses More vivid than usual? No

Please compare your vision during the experience to your everyday vision that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. I do not believe I was seeing through my eyes, because the first sensation I experienced was my vision filling with blue light and I lost the ability to see the world around my physical body.

Please compare your hearing during the experience to your everyday hearing that you had immediately prior to the time of the experience. I was not aware of hearing anything.

Did you seem to be aware of things going on elsewhere? No

Did you pass into or through a tunnel? Yes The experience began with my vision filling with blue light and then a rushing sensation through a tunnel of the same light.

Did you see any beings in your experience? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any deceased (or alive) beings? No

Did you see, or feel surrounded by, a brilliant light? An unusually bright light

Did you see an unearthly light? Uncertain I'm not sure what you mean by unearthly, but the blue light appeared to have no source in the real world so it could be considered unearthly.

Did you seem to enter some other, unearthly world? A clearly mystical or unearthly realm I felt like I had been transported to another dimension, perhaps somewhere in space, because it was dark but there were points of light around us that could have been stars. However, I could also see a world or perhaps a map of the world laid out below us. The world or map of the world was lit and I could see features. I could also see representations of plans and other maps in a way that I really cannot describe.

What emotions did you feel during the experience? I felt exhilaration, optimism, a wonderful sensation of peace. I also felt a certain sense of surprise and condescension from the unearthly presence, like I was an amusing puppy at its feet.

Did you have a feeling of peace or pleasantness? Incredible peace or pleasantness

Did you have a feeling of joy? Incredible joy

Did you feel a sense of harmony or unity with the universe? I felt united or one with the world

Did you suddenly seem to understand everything? Everything about the universe My understanding centered on a sense that there was a plan and a purpose to the universe. There was a rush through future plans for the universe and a sense that I had a place in those plans, but I have no recall of any specifics as to my place. I also had a sense of my own capabilities. I had a sense that I could achieve anything I wanted.

Did scenes from your past come back to you? No

Did scenes from the future come to you? Scenes from the world's future I don't know if I would call them scenes but there was a rush of information about the future of the universe, like pages being quickly rifled and I got glimpses of a specific now and again - none of which I can remember.

Did you come to a border or point of no return? No

What was your religion prior to your experience? Christian- Protestant I attended church regularly as a child, but was not attending church at the time of the event

Have your religious practices changed since your experience? No

What is your religion now? Unaffiliated- Nothing in particular- Religious unaffiliated I do not attend church currently.

Did your experience include features consistent with your earthly beliefs? Content that was both consistent and not consistent with the beliefs you had at the time of your experience I did not have any strong beliefs concerning a plan for the universe. The experience suggests that there are plans and a purpose, but even after the experience, I have no strong belief that there is a plan and a purpose to the universe.

Did you have a change in your values and beliefs because of your experience? No

Did you seem to encounter a mystical being or presence, or hear an unidentifiable voice? I encountered a definite being, or a voice clearly of mystical or unearthly origin I felt a presence in the other dimension, but I did not see it or hear it. I only felt it, but I did feel certain reactions from it as to our presence. It was surprised and amused.

Did you see deceased or religious spirits? No

Did you encounter or become aware of any beings who previously lived on earth who are described by name in religions (for example: Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.)? No

During your experience, did you gain information about premortal existence? No

During your experience, did you gain information about universal connection or oneness? No

During your experience, did you gain information about the existence of God? Yes I felt the presence of a being superior to myself, but I did not identify it as God or a god. If I had to categorize the presence as something, it seemed more like a sentry.

Concerning our Earthly lives other than Religion:

During your experience, did you gain special knowledge or information about your purpose? No

During your experience, did you gain information about the meaning of life? Yes I was aware of gaining access to the purpose of the universe and plans for the universe, but to the extent I encountered specific information, I lost it when I returned to earth.

During your experience, did you gain information about an afterlife? No

Did you gain information about how to live our lives? No

During your experience, did you gain information about life's difficulties, challenges and hardships? No

During your experience, did you gain information about love? Yes Only to the extent that the experience seemed to be created by love and trust.

What life changes occurred in your life after your experience? Slight changes in my life The experience has been a source of sadness for me, because I was unable to explore my connection to my companion in the experience.

Have your relationships changed specifically because of your experience? No

After the NDE:

Was the experience difficult to express in words? Yes I cannot truly express the feelings I had in the other dimension.

How accurately do you remember the experience in comparison to other life events that occurred around the time of the experience? I remember the experience more accurately than other life events that occurred around the time of the experience The event was very vivid and I have not forgotten any of it even though it happened 20 years ago.

Do you have any psychic, non-ordinary or other special gifts after your experience that you did not have before the experience? Yes After the event, I felt a psychic connection to my companion in the experience for a number of years. I would feel his emotions toward me at various times when he was not present. I felt the emotions coming to me as waves across distance. That effect lasted for quite a few years, at least five, but has faded.

Are there one or several parts of your experience that are especially meaningful or significant to you? The fact that I experienced this with another person through love and trust is most meaningful to me, more meaningful than what I experienced in the other dimension. It has also raised a deep curiosity in me regarding whether other people have had this type of experience through love, as opposed to illness or death.

Have you ever shared this experience with others? Yes I have shared it with my children a few years after it happened. I'm not sure if they were influenced by it.

Did you have any knowledge of near death experience (NDE) prior to your experience? Yes I had a somewhat similar experience with my son when he was a baby about six to nine months old. I was holding my son and looking into his eyes. He looked at me with a great deal of love and I experienced a rush of blue light and a tunnel. That time I had a sense of falling and I ended up in a dark and murky place. There wasn't much there and I did not experience it as a different dimension, or that I was there with him. It seemed like I had fallen into his unformed being or something. It did fill me with exhilaration and joy. That experience ended when my son averted his eyes.

What did you believe about the reality of your experience shortly (days to weeks) after it happened? Experience was definitely real I still believe to this day that the experience was real. It seemed to be an advanced version of what had happened to me with my son, but it was so much more than what had happened with my son. It opened up worlds to me, which did not happen with my son. That too, fills me with a sense of curiosity.

What do you believe about the reality of your experience now? Experience was definitely real I still believe it was real. It almost happened again with the same person a few weeks later, but that time, the man turned his face away so that it wouldn't happen. I felt the blue light start to build and he turned his face and it dissipated.

At any time in your life, has anything ever reproduced any part of the experience? Yes I had a somewhat similar experience with my son when he was a baby about six to nine months old. I was holding my son and looking into his eyes. He looked at me with a great deal of love and I experienced a rush of blue light and a tunnel. Also, years later, I saw a couple in a Las Vegas pool. They were holding each other and looking into each other's eyes and I could see blue light enveloping their heads.
